12-year-old Dre Parker might have been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s latest career move lands him in China. Soon after their arrival, Dre falls for his classmate Mei Ying but cultural differences make for an impossible friendship. Worse yet, these feelings make Dre an enemy of the class bully Cheng who wants to keep the two apart. In the land of kung fu, Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre turns to maintenance man Mr. Han. Secretly a kung fu master, Mr. Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not all about punches and parries, but maturity and calm. Dre now realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.
